Vayu Naidu's Ramayana
Performed at the Barbican in November 2010 as part of the Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights, the Ramayana - an ancient epic which dates back about 2000 years epic - provides the backdrop to the festival. It depicts people's struggle against the demonic forces of human nature and its triumphing with the light of courage and hope.
While the original authorship of the Ramayana is attributed to Valmiki, it has been interpreted by minstrels and Storytellers through the ages and more recently as a marathon television series.
Against a backdrop of Indian classical music and world percussion, Vayu Naidu's rendering presents the characters experiencing love, courage, despair, anger, compassion and grief as they fight against oppression.
